Locust

The Devastating Rise And Mysterious Disappearance Of The Insect That Shaped The American Frontier

Jeffrey A. Lockwood

Discover the fascinating history of the swarms of locusts that plagued America in the nineteenth century. These insects brought farms, trains, and entire communities to a standstill, with Congress declaring them the "single greatest impediment to the settlement of the country." Author Jeffrey A. Lockwood dives into the cultural, economic, and political forces at work during this time, while uncovering the elusive reason behind the sudden disappearance of the Rocky Mountain locust. A must-read for history and science enthusiasts alike.

So my plague reading list includes this book, by @J_A_Lockwood, on the locust invasion in the U.S. in 1875. It’s really good. And believe it or not, I got this book way before COVID, after reading Prairie Fires (biography of Laura Ingalls Wilder) 1/      source
