My Own Country

This nonfiction book tells the story of a young Indian doctor in Johnson City, a town nestled in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee that seemed exempt from the anxieties of modern American life. When the local hospital treated its first AIDS patient, the doctor became the local AIDS expert and was soon besieged by a shocking number of male and female patients whose stories occupied his mind and took over his life. This book explores medicine in the American heartland and confronting one's deepest prejudices and fears.
