The Boldness of Betty

A 1913 Dublin Lockout Novel

Anna Carey

Set in Dublin in 1913, "The Boldness of Betty" follows the story of a young girl who is fed up with her boring job at a sweet shop and envious of the girls who attend a posh nearby school. However, Betty's life takes a dramatic turn when industrial unrest shakes the city and her brother is badly injured by a police charge. As violence and hunger grip the city, Betty becomes involved with the Irish Women Workers' Union and meets Countess Markievicz and sympathetic suffragettes. Can Betty make a difference and help her sister and baby Robbie escape the Irish Church's control?

I have a LOVELY book for you! #TheBoldnessOfBetty by @urchinette is an engaging, inspiring YA novel set during The Dublin Lockout of 1913. Honestly, I find Anna Carey's novels give me courage and recalibrate my own political compass. Even though I'm not a YA, I LOVED this! 😍      source
