The House of Mirth book cover

The House of Mirth

Edith Wharton

Explore the decadent world of turn-of-the-century New York society in this tragic love story. Follow Lily Bart, a ravishing beauty, as she navigates the destructive effects of wealth and social hypocrisy. In a desperate attempt to secure her future, Lily becomes embroiled in a series of scandals that lead to her social exclusion. This compelling novel by a gifted storyteller offers a clear-eyed observation of the savagery beneath the well-bred surface of high society. Adapted into a successful motion picture, it is a must-read for fans of The Age of Innocence and Ethan Frome.

I read that in 9th grade, and that book completely changed my life. I love Edith Wharton, and my teacher Ms. Fox had us read it, and I just never read a book like that before, like a book that’s from the early 1900’s but felt so modern in terms of what the main character was going through.      source
