Ruth Jefferson, an experienced African American labor and delivery nurse in Connecticut, is reassigned from a white supremacist couple's newborn after initially starting a routine checkup. When the baby goes into cardiac distress, Ruth hesitates to perform CPR and is then charged with a serious crime.
