Today, we turn to one person to provide what an entire village once did: a sense of grounding, meaning, and continuity. What children do is complicate, implicate, give plot lines to the story, color to the picture, darken everything, bring fear as never before, suggest the holy, explain the ferocity of the human mind, undo or redo some of the past while casting shadows into the future.
