Lecciones de la Historia book cover
Lecciones de la Historia
Will Durant - 1997-01-01 (publicado por primera vez en 1968)
Calificación de Goodreads
Will Durant once wrote that "most history is guessing, & the rest is prejudice." Now, 33 years later, the Durants, in this peroration to their monumental "Story of Civilization," look back to record the lessons & conclusions of their 10-volume excursion into human folly & achievement--&, coincidentally, to determine what value historical guesswork & historians' predispositions may have in understanding the nature of humanity. Their reflections are thematic in nature, discussing the influence & effect upon history of certain qualities, institutions & movements: race, character, moral systems, religion, socialism, government, war etc. Their overall conclusion is at once optimistic & realistic; the phenomenon of progress is no figment of the historian's imagination; it's real, in the sense that each generation is born to a heritage richer than that received by their fathers. Thus, the 20th century is the most blessed of all eras so far, from a cultural standpoint, for it has assimilated the best of the Periclean Greeks, of the Renaissance, of the Voltairian age etc. The Durants' "Story" is, despite the cavils of a few disputatious historians, the historical synthesis par excellence for the intelligent nonspecialist. The Lessons of History, despite its extreme brevity, forms an integrally necessary part of that opus & must be read as such, or as an independent work in the tradition of Augustine's Retractationes & Toynbee's Reconsiderations.--Kirkus (edited)

Fossil Future
Why Global Human Flourishing Requires More Oil, Coal, and Natural Gas--Not Less
Alex Epstein - 2022-05-24
Calificación de Goodreads
This compelling book challenges conventional thinking about the future of energy. Delving into data and insights, the author presents a unique perspective on the benefits of fossil fuels for global human flourishing – including their ability to provide low-cost, reliable energy to millions of people around the world. By applying a "human flourishing framework" to the latest evidence, the author concludes that fossil fuels will continue to far outweigh their side effects for generations to come.
Catherine Shanahan - 2008-11-14
Calificación de Goodreads
Deep Nutrition illustrates how our ancestors used nourishment to sculpt their anatomy, engineering bodies of extraordinary health and beauty. The length of our limbs, the shape of our eyes, and the proper function of our organs are all gifts of our ancestor's collective culinary wisdom. Citing the foods of traditional cultures from the Ancient Egyptians and the Maasai to the Japanese and the French, the Shanahans identify four food categories all the world's healthiest diets have in common, the Four Pillars of World Cuisine. Using the latest research in physiology and genetics, Dr. Shanahan explains why your family's health depends on eating these foods. In a world of competing nutritional ideologies, Deep Nutrition gives us the full picture, empowering us to take control of our destiny in ways we might never have imagined.

Superpronosticadores.
The Art and Science of Prediction
Philip E. Tetlock - 2015-09-29
