State of Empowerment
Low-Income Families and the New Welfare State
Carolyn Barnes - 2020-03-09
Рейтинг Goodreads
Discover how after-school programs funded by the government can empower low-income families and enhance their civic and political lives. State of Empowerment, by Carolyn Barnes, shows how these programs offer more than just academic support, and have become powerful tools for parental engagement and involvement in the community. Through ethnographic accounts of three organizations, Barnes demonstrates how government funding can shift power away from bureaucrats and into the hands of those who need it most.

What About Mozart? What About Murder? book cover
What About Mozart? What About Murder?
Reasoning From Cases
Howard S. Becker - 2014-08-22
Рейтинг Goodreads
This book challenges the conventional definition of deviance and argues that it's better understood as a function of labeling. The author uses examples like murder to demonstrate different ways of studying society, urging researchers to use carefully investigated cases instead of speculation. With his conversational flair and personal perspective, the author provides a guide for producing general sociological knowledge through case studies. This book is a must-read for anyone in the fields of sociology or criminology looking to change their approach to research.

Becker uses the examples of Mozart and an assassin to discuss not only the sociology of deviance (a topic he has written about, in Outsiders) but also how to generalize from case studies, how to theorize, and how to undertake comparisons. Fantastic book.      источник

#RPVBooks while I loved this book, i cannot say it is as pedagogical and didactic as the Segev volume. HOWEVER … the very positive side of this volume is the numerous applications and examples provided. To note, nor many “how to”’s but more like applications.      источник

This book is absolutely incredible and I am tempted to introduce a couple of weeks on semantic network analysis in my mixed methods course. #RPVBooks Segev manages to write extremely well and be super easy to understand, and all authors make a real effort to showcase SNA.      источник

I asked because this book is pretty good. #RPVBooks While nobody cited it in their responses to my query I found it extremely useful to understand the foundations of SNA. It’s a less mathematical introduction to social network analysis and more focused on the concepts. 10/10      источник
