Journey through Genius

The Great Theorems of Mathematics

William Dunham

This book takes readers on a journey through the history of great mathematical theorems, putting each one into its historical context and exploring the very human and often turbulent life of the creator. It covers the lives of great mathematicians like Archimedes, Gerolamo Cardano, and Georg Cantor, and provides step-by-step proofs for the theorems. This unique combination of historical, biographical, and mathematical information makes for a fascinating read and an introduction to a neglected field of human creativity.

For people who want to see some actual math in their pop math books, all the books by William Dunham are superb. I especially recommend “Journey through genius” and “The calculus gallery”. “Prime obsession” by John Derbyshire is also excellent.      source
