Married to the Mouse

Walt Disney World and Orlando

Richard E. Foglesong

A fascinating look at the complex and evolving relationship between Walt Disney World and Orlando, Florida, this book explores the conflict and compromise that has characterized their "economic development marriage" since the 1960s. From how Orlando leaders seduced the Disney Co. with big road projects to how the company has used its governmental powers, the author offers a balanced and critical analysis of the Disney-Orlando story. This thought-provoking read raises broad questions about urban development policy and the impact of global corporations on local economies.

@gregde @rseroter @RobertIger If you're interested in what it was like in Orlando due to WDW, this is a fascinating read. Our family moved there in 1975 when Disney was mostly orange groves and some rides. My best friend's family had been in Orlando for 3 generations. So many stories.      source
