The Scar book cover

The Scar

China Miéville

This dark tale follows a group of prisoners and slaves on a seafaring vessel, whose bodies have been grotesquely remade into biological oddities. Joining them are a handful of travelers, each with their own reason for fleeing their city. The journey takes a deadly turn when the ship is besieged by pirates and the surviving passengers are brought to a landless city ruled by the bizarre duality called the Lovers. Our protagonist, a linguist named Bellis Coldwine, furtively seeks information about Armada’s agenda, which is tied to dark, amorphous shapes floating miles below the waters. Will Bellis be able to survive and uncover the truth about Armada’s chilling mission?

If you are looking for a fantastic book to inspire your creative mind, check out Perdido Street Station and it's sequel, The Scar. They are some of the most visual books I've ever read. Here are some demos based on them.      source
