Deaf Republic

Poems

Ilya Kaminsky

"Deaf Republic" by Ilya Kaminsky is a stunning collection of poems that explores the power and importance of language in the face of political unrest. After a deaf boy is killed by soldiers during a protest, the citizens of the occupied country all go deaf, and their dissent becomes coordinated by sign language. Through the private lives of townspeople, the book delves into the complexities of violence and oppression, while also offering a love story and an urgent plea for collective action. A finalist for the T.S. Eliot Prize and the Forward Prize for Best Collection, "Deaf Republic" is a powerful and necessary read for our current times.

“We Lived Happily During the War” is part of a collection called “Deaf Republic" by Ilya Kaminsky, a Deaf Ukrainian author. It tells the story of a town whose inhabitants “go deaf” after the soldiers occupying it kill a Deaf child. We can’t recommend this beautiful book enough.      source
