French Rural History

An Essay on Its Basic Characteristics

Marc Bloch

Explore the unique characteristics of French rural history in this timeless classic. Originally published in 1931 by Marc Bloch, this long-out-of-print book has been republished to showcase the foundations of French rural history. In the preface, Lucien Febvre notes that Bloch knew the importance of reworking historical writing every twenty years to improve hypotheses and increase precision. Although Bloch never got the chance to rework it, this classic represents an essential piece of history that every lover of the subject should read.

Bloch’s most famous work is his two volume study Feudal Society. But I myself prefer his French Rural History, that draws as much on his travels through the countryside as on hours spent in the archives. This book blends environmental with social history, in exploring the linkages between human uses of the cultivated field, the forest, and pasture land.      source
