From the Maccabees to the Mishnah, Third Edition book cover

From the Maccabees to the Mishnah, Third Edition

Shaye Cohen

This seminal work offers deep insight into the history and development of Judaism between 164 BCE to 300 CE. With a synthesis of religion, literature, and history, the author provides an understanding of the social and cultural context of Judaism during this key period, exploring the relationship between Jews and Gentiles, the development of normative Judaism and other Jewish sects, and more. This third edition includes a brand-new chapter on the parting of ways between Jews and Christians in the second century CE, making it the clearest introduction to this era that shaped Judaism and provided the context for early Christianity.

@AlanfromBigEasy Both existed, but there was clearly some tension between the power structures. Here's one example from Mishna Shekalim 1:4. I'd also look at Shaye Cohen's wonderful book, From Maccabees to the Mishna      source
