Tess of the D'Urbervilles book cover

Tess of the D'Urbervilles

Thomas Hardy

A woman's search for fortune leads to a tragic downfall in this powerful novel. Tess Durbeyfield's attempts to claim kinship with the wealthy D'Urbervilles prove disastrous when she meets her "cousin" Alec. Later, she finds love in Angel Clare, but must choose whether to reveal her past or keep it secret for the sake of their future. Thomas Hardy's "Tess of the D'Urbervilles" is a moving and poetic tale that provides a sensitive portrayal of Tess and a scathing critique of society's conventions.

It was either TESS OF THE FUCKING D’URBERVILLES or SILAS MARNER. I liked TESS more when I read it as an adult, and I bet I’d like SILAS MARNER more, too. I don’t understand why they give some of these books to adolescents to read.      source
