The Big Test

The Secret History of the American Meritocracy

Nicholas Lemann

This non-fiction book delves into the history, design, and purpose of the SAT and how it became a crucial aspect of American education. The book reveals the political and social experiment that led to its creation and how it failed to achieve its intended goal. Through the author's vivid storytelling and analysis, it questions the fairness of the meritocracy system and the unequal allocation of opportunities. As a result, this thought-provoking book carries important implications for social and educational policies in today's society.

@NormieDeGuerre I am. That you have so much invested in believing otherwise, based—I suspect—on not having my experience at the two types of institutions but on your own fantasy of American meritocracy, is, as I said, depressing. Anyway, this is a good book on the topic.      source
