The Evangelicals book cover

The Evangelicals

The Struggle to Shape America

Frances Fitzgerald

This epic history tells the powerful, dramatic story of the Evangelical movement in America, from the Puritan era to the 2016 election. Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Frances FitzGerald provides a fair-minded overview of this vitally important religious sensibility. The Evangelical movement began as a populist rebellion against established churches, becoming the dominant religious force in the country. Although they were once a monolithic group, Evangelicals now range from Tea Party supporters to social reformers. FitzGerald suggests that evangelical churches must embrace ethnic minorities if they are to survive in a declining religious faith era. A thought-provoking, deeply researched, and necessary read.

@mjspieglan ha wasn't intending that for you :) but yes, "American evangelical" is an extremely unique religion that has evolved since the revolutionary war and bears increasingly little resemblance to those who call themselves evangelicals outside the U.S. Here's some good reads:      source
