The Pine Barrens book cover

The Pine Barrens

John McPhee

Explore the vast, near-wilderness of New Jersey's Pine Barrens, a region larger than most national parks. While most of the state is a suburban corridor, the Pine Barrens remain largely undeveloped due to its sandy and acidic soils. In this book, the author delves into the history of this unique region and the misunderstood "Pineys" who call it home, sharing their distinctive folklore and way of life.

@thewrens I really love that book. It's one that I've read a bunch of times—I saw it again on a different bookshelf the other day, and so brought it back to this pile, ha. This was my mother's copy. I grew up in Chatsworth, "capital of the pines."      source
