H Is for Hawk
Helen MacDonald
This memoir explores the themes of obsession, madness, memory, myth, and history as experienced by an experienced falconer mourning the sudden loss of her father in London. She turns to training one of the most vicious predators, a goshawk, as a means of coping with her grief, and immerses herself in the guidance of T.H. White's chronicle on the same topic. This heart-wrenching and humorous account offers a unique look at the magnetism of an extraordinary beast, and a legendary writer's eccentric falconry.

These are the last 5 science/nature books I read--as strong a line-up as I've ever read. I recommend them all. – source2021-09-06T11:13:37.000Z
56/100. H is for Hawk by Helen Macdonald. Another book where I started a few times, but when I finally got in I understood why everyone is so mesmerised with this. Part nature writing, part memoir, part traversing a literary hero's path. The prose is beautiful. – source
