In terms of new books. I can't recommend Vanessa Siddle Walker's "The Lost Education of Horace Tate" enough!!! Teachers were at the center of the movement. (For the legal history, the documentary "The Road to Brown" and Taylor Branch's "Parting the Waters")      source
