The River of Doubt
Theodore Roosevelt's Darkest Journey
Candice Millard
The River of Doubt is a gripping true story of Theodore Roosevelt and his son Kermit's journey through an uncharted tributary of the Amazon. Faced with deadly Indians, piranhas, and boulder-strewn rapids, the expedition pushed the limits of physical, mental, and emotional endurance. With a powerful nonfiction narrative and stunning depiction of the Amazon rainforest, Candice Millard's debut is an extraordinary adventure and biographical portrait of one of the most famous Americans who ever lived.

I thought I knew about Theodore Roosevelt. This book opens with him stranded in the Amazon jungle begging his son to let him kill himself so he wouldn’t be a burden on their exploring party any longer. And then it gets better from there. – source
