Twilight of Democracy

The Seductive Lure of Authoritarianism

Anne Applebaum

Explore the resurgence of authoritarianism in the 21st century with Pulitzer Prize-winning author and historian Anne Applebaum's Twilight of Democracy. As liberal democracy wanes and populism and nationalism gain traction across the globe, Applebaum offers insight into the appeal of the strongman leader and political systems that prioritize loyalty above all else. Through historical examples and investigative reporting in several countries, she sheds light on the practical motivations that drive individuals toward authoritarianism and highlights the dangers of a one-party state. Discover the seductive power of totalitarian thinking in this thought-provoking and timely book.

As 2020 comes to a close, I wanted to share my annual lists of favorites. I’ll start by sharing my favorite books this year. I hope you enjoy reading these as much as I did.      source
I’ve been listening to the audiobook version of @anneapplebaum’s Twilight of Democracy every night this week, and it’s just too good for me not to buy the book as well. Admittedly, it’s not exactly conducive to sweet dreams, but I think it is – alas – essential reading/listening      source
No book better describes our political times than @anneapplebaum’s “Twilight of Democracy”. Her insights on the rise of soft authoritarianism in the West are crucial. As a conservative shaped by the Cold War, it was distressing to read of her subjects’ shameless hypocrisy.      source
