A Novel
Marlon James - 2014-10-02
Goodreads Rating
This gripping novel delves into the attempted assassination of Bob Marley in the late 1970s - just days before his iconic Smile Jamaica Concert. With machine guns blazing, gunmen stormed his home, nearly killing the reggae star, his wife, and manager in the process. Spanning decades and continents, this fictional exploration sheds light on the dangerous and unstable time and its aftermath - from Kingston in the '70s to New York's crack wars in the '80s to a radically altered Jamaica in the '90s. With a diverse cast of characters, including assassins and ghosts, A Brief History of Seven Killings is a revealing modern epic that secures Marlon James' place among the literary greats of his generation.

Just finished A Brief History Of Seven Killings by @MarlonJames5. What a fantastic, intense, engrossing read. Savoring the “just completed an awesome book” sense of accomplishment, but already a bit lonely that I’m not yet lost in another story. What to read next...      source

Joan Didion - 2005-11-15 (first published in 1970)
Goodreads Rating
This novel delves into the malaise of American life in the late 1960s, taking place in Hollywood, Las Vegas, and the desolate Mojave Desert. Through spare, blistering prose, the novel immerses the reader in a world beyond good and evil, exploring the aridity of the soul and the crisis of both protagonist and society. After more than three decades, this book remains a disturbing and riveting read, with an intensity that still startles.
